About the Rank

In Cub Scouting, the Lion rank is the introductory level of the program designed for kindergarten-age boys and girls. It serves as an age-appropriate introduction to Scouting and helps young children develop a sense of belonging, cooperation, and basic skills. The Lion rank is a relatively recent addition to the Cub Scout program and was introduced in 2016 by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Lions participate in the program with their adult partner, usually a parent or guardian. This partnership ensures that young children have guidance and support throughout their activities. Although participation with an adult partner is required for all Lion awards, recognition items are for the Scouts only.

Once a Lion completes the kindergarten year, they transition to the next level of Cub Scouting, which is the Tiger rank. The Tiger rank is designed for first-grade children and builds upon the skills and experiences gained during the Lion program.

The Lion rank is earned by completing five adventures described below.
